A Golden Age for Dystopian Fiction

Dear Readers
Thank you to everyone who ordered / reviewed / listened to the audiobook for ‘Why You Were Taken’. It’s doing well and has a 4.5 star rating on Audible. Yay!

We’re busy redesigning the cover (again!) to freshen it up for the release of the third book in the series and to make sure it’s signaling the correct genre. Of course, once we have the new cover finalised, you’ll be the first to see it.

(If you haven’t yet read ‘Why You Were Taken’, you can grab it for 99c till the 1st of September.)

It’s a great time to have a set of dystopian thrillers published: Entertainment Weekly reports that dystopian lit is enjoying a surge in popularity. Classics like George Orwell’s ‘1984′ and Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ are doing especially well.

I’ll be handing over the manuscript for the third book in this series to my editor next week. It’s called ‘What Have We Done’ and it’s available for pre-order already. Eeek!

Next month I’ll start work on the prequel novella, and hopefully I’ll be able to share that with you before the end of the year. Itll make a great December freebie.

I’ve just published an excerpt from ‘Grey Magic’ as a standalone short story on Amazon. ‘Fenrir (free till the end of the week) is about a viking who is called to fulfill his bloody destiny despite his desire to stay home with his love.

Hello readers! ‘How We Found You’ (the sequel to ‘Why You Were Taken’) is now available to pre-order on Amazon.

Here is the blurb:

Would you sacrifice your son to save your daughter?

There’s something different about Kate’s four-year-old son. He wasn’t created the old fashioned way. Now a violent cult wants him dead and Kate will do anything to protect him – until they take her daughter.

The pre-order is full price ($3.99) but if you wait till the 19th of May I’ll be running a week-long 99c promo to get it to climb the Amazon charts and gain visibility. As a member of this list you have the inside track, so if you’d like to grab the 99c deal you know what to do!

If you prefer a signed paperback (R248), you can pre-order directly from me. We deliver door-to-door to all major cities for just R39. Order 2 or more for a 20% discount and free delivery.

March 2017 newsletter

Why You Were Taken
Because of your generous support, reviews, and sharing, the re-launch of ‘Why You Were Taken’ has been even better than I hoped! We made the top 100 in three different categories in the US and two in the UK. It even broke through to the top 5,000 overall in Amazon.com, which I am thrilled about!

We’re only halfway through the promo (ends on Monday 27th) so I’m hoping to have even better results to share with you soon — and hopefully it’ll come in the form of a little orange bestseller badge, which is what you get from Amazon if your book is #1 in its category (it reached #33 yesterday).

Locally, we printed a limited run with the new cover, most of which Exclusive Books quickly snatched up (thank you Exclusive Books!) and the paperback is also available worldwide from Amazon. Which brings me to … the sequel, ‘How We Found You.’

How We Found You
I recently finished the final round of edits and it’s now with my beta readers, who so far have good things to say (thank goodness!). I found it quite nerve wracking to write a sequel so every nice thing they had to say has been balm to my stressed (and sleep-deprived) brain. The cover is being designed as I type this and you’ll be the first to see it as soon as I have it in my grubby little hands!

I’m super excited to tell you that we’ll be launching it in the third week of May 2017.

May is going to be quite a month, as I’ll be:
• Speaking at the Kingsmead Book Fair (13th)
• Speaking at the Franschhoek Literary Festival (19th & 20th)
• Launching ‘How We Found You’ (22nd – 26th)

Most importantly, it’s Baby Alexandra’s first birthday on the 20th! Where, where, where does the time go? It feels like just yesterday when I had her nestled in my hoodie, on my lap, as I was preparing ‘Sticky Fingers’ and ‘Grey Magic’ for print. I can’t believe she’s such a big girl already!

The BookEaters
I come across a lot of great deals and free books in my business and, while I will share a few of them every now and then in this newsletter, I don’t want to bombard you with them, so I started a separate mailing list for those voracious readers who are looking for new authors to try. Sign up if you’re keen to support these indie authors (here’s an example of the ad-hoc emails I send out to these subscribers) or join our Facebook group.

In the mean time here are just three of the deals I thought you might like to know about:

British Crime Spree
Free stories from some of the UK’s most popular crime and thriller writers.

Southern Bound by Stuart Jaffe
A paranormal mystery (FREE)

When Max Porter discovers his office is haunted by the ghost of a 1940s detective, he does the only sensible thing … he starts a detective agency!

The Legacy Trilogy
A boxed set of original dystopian novels for 99c

The Legacy Trilogy is narrative of good and evil, love and passion, right and wrong – and at the centre of the story a strong woman who is prepared to sacrifice everything for the cause she believes in.

And that’s a wrap! Thanks again so much for your support, especially with the relaunch. It’s been a blast! And I can’t wait to show you that little orange badge. *holds thumbs*

Keep well, keep reading —

Review: Why You Were Taken

WYWT kindle cover flatBook Title: Why You Were Taken

Author: JT Lawrence

This was such a fun read! Totally outside my typical comfort zone, but I’m so glad I decided to try something new. … The glue to this story for me was the characters; they are what truly made this a memorable read in a vast sea of futuristic stories that seem to be all the rage these days.

We pretty much begin with a bang as this book is gripping from page one.

A reader’s recent review described it as “sexy, smart, and sci-fi.” – if that doesn’t belong in your Christmas stocking, then I feel sorry for your stocking.

“Author, playwright, bookdealer – Janita Lawrence is many things. Media Update sat down with her recently to talk about all things writing – including a look at her latest novel, Why You Were Taken.”
